Ivory Coast: ONPC firefighters trained to intervene in high-risk areas

From April 1st to 29th, 2026, a training session on height and excavation intervention techniques was held in Tengrela for 12 firefighters from the National Office of Civil Protection (ONPC). This activity was part of the project to support the securing and development of artisanal gold mining as a factor of development and social cohesion in northern Côte d'Ivoire (SECORCI 2), funded by the European Union and implemented by Coginta.

The department of Tengrela is characterized by the presence of numerous pits and excavations linked to illegal gold mining, which is severely damaging the landscape. In this context, firefighters are frequently called upon for delicate interventions involving victims trapped in narrow tunnels or unstable terrain.

The training therefore emphasized the development of specific technical skills, including rope access techniques, securing access to hazardous areas, and methods for extracting victims from confined spaces. Modules dedicated to safety principles, risk management, and the proper use of specialized equipment complemented the training program. Furthermore, practical exercises and realistic simulations, inspired by real-life accidents—such as falls into gold mining pits—allowed participants to consolidate their knowledge in near-real-life conditions.

This initiative was specifically aimed at strengthening the operational capabilities of rescue teams operating in these high-risk areas, enabling them to act effectively and safely during accidents occurring in difficult-to-access environments. Ultimately, this training will also contribute to improving the safety of communities living near artisanal gold mining sites.
